Syringomyelia

 

Syringomyelia (also known as Syrinx) is a cystic cavation of the spinal cord.  It can occur from a Chiari malformation, trauma, congenital malformation, inflammation, or tumor. Syrinx present with progressive neurologic loss of function including weakness, spasticity, numbness and pain.  Treatment may require direct drainage of the syrinx.  Decompression of the spinal cord may also be necessary.
